Chia Seeds

Chia Seeds & their Nutritional Value

Chia Seed comes from the plant Salvia Hispanica L. , and were at one time a major food crop in Guatemala & Mexico.

Chia Seed has little if any distinctive flavor and is full of many nutrients. It provides fiber, protein, healthy fats and many minerals such as phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, zinc, and is the richest plant source of omega 3-fatty acids. Sixty percent of the oil in chia seed is from omega-3 fatty acids.

The fiber in Chia Seed is mainly soluble fibre and mucilage, the substance responsible  for the gelatinous texture of the moistened Chia Seed. Several studies have shown that the high fiber content in Chia Seed can increase satiety and reduce hunger between meals. These fibers may help to low LDL cholesterol, slow down digestion and regulate blood sugar levels.

When increasing fibre intake remember to drink plenty of water. This may help with digestive symptoms like possible abdominal pain, gas & bloating.

The health benefits of Chia Seeds are numerous.  Introduce these seeds to your diet and see a difference in how you feel.
